Key West State of Mind / keywest33

Capt. Tony's claims to be the oldest bar in Key West. Well, that is half the story. The building used to house the original Sloppy Joe's which was the first bar, opening immediately after prohibition was repealed. Sloppy Joe was a gunrunner and bootlegger, and close confidant of Hemingway. Sloppy Joe moved his bar from this location when his landlord had the audacity to raise rent from $3 a week to $4 a week. He bought a building just down the street, picked up everything during business hours (including the urinals and toilet fixtures in the restrooms, more on that later) and had his patron carry their drinks down to the new location. Nobody missed a drink, and it was business as usual.
