Modern Mosaics - Carl B. Johnson
Primarily a representational painter, Carl obscures the lines between Abstract Expressionism and Contemporary Impressionism creating a style that is truly unique. many of his works involve the artist's observations of disappearing faces and scenes in his community. Carl is partner with Liz Nicklus with mosaic mural installations, such as the 10 by 65 foot exterior installation the Atlantic Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, NJ, and the more recent "River Dance" installed in the Millville Housing Authority's Residence at River Park in Millville, NJ. Carl brings a hands-on approach in the joint workshops that he and Liz teach. Carl has served as an officer on the board of directors of the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts for the first few years of its development. He is a founding member of the Glasstown Nine, a painting group comprised of Cumberland County artists. He manages a website dedicated to promoting 3rd Fridays in Millville (www.3rdfriday.org) and publishes a regional underground arts newspaper, "INFERNO". A community activist, Carl served on the board of directors of AHOME (Affordable Homes of Millville, Ecumenical); the Da Vinci Art Alliance in Philadelphia, PA; and is the spokesperson for the Millville Center City Neighborhood Group. Carl sits on community committees such as the Weed and Seed Steering Committee, Main Street Millville Design Committee and its Wayfinding sub-committee, and the Citizen-Police Advisory Committee.
